Moved to hosted server

We finally broke down and purchased a hosting plan. If you noticed some funky-ness tonight, it was because I was in the process of getting the site moved. We went from a server in the office closet to dreamhost.com. We’ve been looking at different providers for a while now and decided to go here based on the recommendation of a friend and a $50 off coupon =).

Why do you care? Well, we should all get consistently better performance and uptime with the new provider. We won’t have to worry about Todd hogging all the bandwidth with World of Warcraft. When the power goes out here, the site will still be up (it’s actually in L.A. now). It also lets us have a completely separate development area so I don’t break things while trying to “improve” them. Last but not least, I don’t have to worry about administering a server when I come home from work. I do that all day and the last thing I want to do is my job when I’m at home.

So my first Mother’s Day turned out to be quite good. Cooper woke up babbling as per his usual and after about 20 minutes, I couldn’t ignore it any longer. When I went into his room to get him, this is what I saw:

We usually don’t do presents for holidays such as this, so imagine my surprise to find a pile of presents waiting for me. I even got a card from the dogs!

According to Jeff, this isn’t just a Mother’s Day present, but a Father’s Day and Anniversary present all in one. It’s a Canon Digital Rebel XT and all the accessories we need to get started using it. It has a lot of features and I’m sure it will take me a while to learn how to use it. I’m hoping Cooper will give me a good couple of naps today so I can get started learning.

Jeff got to play around with it quite a bit yesterday and I must say, it’s a pretty awesome camera!

Maintenance tonight…

I’m going to be doing some maintenance tonight that will take the site down. For those that care, I’m trying to convert the site from a traditional apache host into a virtual host. Ultimately, this will make the production site more stable. I’ll be able to bring other sites up and down along side the main site without affecting it.

As an example, I can bring up dev.merys.net for us to test with. We can test changes to the layout, theme, CSS, and other changes areas without putting all of you through our little experiments =).

I don’t know how long this will take today/tonight, but I’ll try to get things stable as soon as possible.

Thanks for your patience while we work out the kinks (remember, we’re new at this =)).

So we’re trying the blog thing. Ideally, we’ll be making it easier for us to share photos of Cooper with everyone. We don’t get out of town to visit as much as we should, so hopefully this will help!

This site is under big-time construction, so bear with us while we figure out what we’re doing =)
